Wrongness Leads to Growth

Why is it that being wrong is considered a bad thing? As if being wrong means you are dumb and uneducated. Even the smallest things make people so defensive when they are wrong. It is amazing the relationships that are ruined because once cannot accept that they were wrong. But being wrong really isn’t as bad as we make it out to be.

Being wrong should be a learning experience. I am not saying not to argue your point because that is your right to. I am saying if you know or later find out that you were wrong admit it. It is liberating to let go of that awkwardness after an argument. Being wrong once does not mean you are wrong all the time. Many adults and young adults seem to have trouble submitting to being wrong and decide to continue living in their wrongness. Even when bad decisions turn worse they refuse to believe they were wrong about their choices.

To me being wrong is a new opportunity, a new chance to accept and become the person you are really meant to be. Maybe the person you have been with for 10 or 15 years was a bad choice and they bring you down instead of lifting you up. They stress you out instead of helping you through though times. It is okay to have made that wrong choice as long as you accept it and take steps towards correcting it. Maybe it isn’t the partner you chose maybe you are wrong about your career choice or an argument you had. Take these opportunities of realizing you were wrong as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Denying you are wrong is like pulling a shade over your own eyes, no one in this life is perfect and no one is this life is correct 100% of the time. If you are constantly denying your wrongness you will never learn from your mistakes and will be doing more damage to yourself than you know. People are embarrassed about being wrong and we shouldn’t be. As a mother if I am wrong I tell my children I was wrong, and I try to correct it as best as I can, that way they know that being wrong is not that big a deal and it is nothing to be embarrassed about.  We cannot grow without making mistakes to learn and grow from. Being wrong should be like opening a new door towards growth not something you deny and hide. Accept your wrongness just as much as you accept your rightness.

  1. I have to say this is one of the things love about myself. I can admit when I am wrong and it is truly empowering not only own up to my mistakes but LEARN from them and feed that knowledge to someone else. I see SOOOO many loved ones living “shaded” lives and it hurts to watch some someone too afraid to face their truth ….that they already know… Thanks for this piece!

    1. It really is heartbreaking to watch people dwell in their mistakes and KNOW and even ADMIT they made a mistake but never correct the mistake. I feel like sometime people think it is easier to stay where they are than starting all over. Starting all over is never a bad thing though.
